Forget what you've learned in the past about resumes! Most employers today look for accomplishments in addition to duties. A strong resume will contain a brief, yet powerful profile rather than a vague objective statement. Don't be afraid of "tooting your own horn," because you can bet that is what your competition is doing.

The following strategies updated an old resume which wasn't working, and focus on two crucial elements of a winning resume - the profile statement and summary of qualifications.


The Objective Statement BEFORE -

Resume Objective: Management career position in growth-oriented organization with focus on international sales and marketing with Latin American and Caribbean. 


The Professional Profile AFTER -

International Sales and Marketing Executive

Dynamic, profit-driven sales management professional with over 10 years of measurable achievements building and leading operations through steady growth and global market expansion. Proven qualifications in strategic marketing, organizational leadership, project management and competitive product positioning. Consistently recognized for delivering continued quality service, improved productivity and increased profitability. Visionary leader with ability to build cohesive teams, maximize revenue growth and exceed corporate goals and objectives.


Now that we've determined that this "after" is already serious contender, let's examine his qualifications.

"Summary of Qualifications" BEFORE -

*Ten years' experience of business development in the US and abroad
*Strong communication skills. Native tri-lingual capability (English, Spanish and Portuguese)
*Excellent Organizational Skills
*Quick and Effective decision maker (Solution Oriented)
*Recognized as sales leader


"Qualification Highlights" AFTER -

  • Strong track record of consistent business development over a 10 year period with an outstanding record of providing significant sales and profit growth. Average 50% over plan for three years straight. *(Demonstrates concrete career progression)
  • Excellent capacity to work in and understand diverse cultures; extremely well traveled, and multi-lingual with fluency in English, Spanish and Portuguese. *(Important qualities for successful international relations)
  • Exceptional ability to identify and capitalize on global market opportunities; able to successfully develop, negotiate and maintain cross-cultural relationships.Captured key account with leading telecommunications company and secured over $500K in revenues.. *(Crucial skill for maintaining profitability)
  • Superior leadership, team building and motivation abilities; demonstrated competencies in generating enthusiasm and results from sales staff. Team increased productivity by 65% after incentive-based performance was adopted.*(Evidence of commitment to team-based operations)
  • Recognized for performance excellence; recipient four successive "President Awards for generating over $1.2M in sales annually. *(Denotes commitment to success and results)

Clearly, you should see why this "After" resume presents a highly successful and accomplished candidate. Both the profile and qualifications highlight his contributions and demonstrate his potential. Your competition is not going to be afraid of "tooting his own horn," and you shouldn't either. You absolutely MUST outsell your competition, otherwise you may miss out on important interviews.
